Course
Anti-clockwise circuit course with start at Poles, out to a buoy, 700 metres offshore, left turn around a buoy, 600 metres north, then left turn back to the northern end of long reef beach. The swim "tours the buoys", taking you over some stunning reef inside Long Reef headland.
Conditions
longreeflogoOrganisers say: The beach faces the south east and picks up any east to south east swell. This makes it one of Sydney's higher energy beaches. The waves average 1.6 m, being highest in the south and centre, decreasing north of the Long Reef surf club owing to some protection from the outer reefs (bomboras).

Between Long Reef Surf Club and Dee Why Point there are regularly 8 strong rips. The rips and their feeder currents usually detach the single sand bar from the beach. This can form a continuous trough of variable width and depth, but with all currents heading for one of the rips. So be careful!

Long Reef is a relatively popular summer beach offering some protection from the summer nor' easters. In winter, it is exposed and often blown out, but very popular with windsurfers and kite surfers.
Years run, starters last time
4th year, 168 starters in 2008, when the swim last ran, on a Saturday in December.
Prizes

Each category will receive 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. Lucky door prizes will also be announced for those present at the presentation.

Postponement

DECISION TO POST-PONE BASED ON Australian Tsunami Warning System (ATWS)

It is with sincere apologies that Long Reef SLSC cancelled ‘Tour of Buoys’ scheduled for Sunday 28th February, 2010. Who would have guest that we would have had a Tsunami warning. As of 8.30am that date Long Reef SLSC intended to run the event as conditions were near perfect for a brilliant ‘Tour of Bouys’ over Long Reef’s headland and Aquatic Reserve. At 8.45am SLSNSW issued a direction that ALL beaches must be closed for 24 hours based on the Australian Tsunami Warning System (ATWS). The ATWS is a national effort involving the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau), Geoscience Australia (GA) and Emergency Management Australia (EMA) to provide a comprehensive tsunami warning system. It is clear that this system needs to be further reviewed as all who attended Long Reef had a different view of the warning. Never the less the direction was enforced by SLSNSW and local councils, not to mention the issue of insurance. I know some of you have questioned why SLSNSW still ran the State Championships at Swansea beach. Long Reef SLSC has the same questions and this is an internal issue that Long Reef SLSC has taken up in another forum after SLSNSW our governing body ignored the ATWS.

Nevertheless, Long Reef SLSC is keen to put it all be behind us and get into water for the 2010 Tour of Buoys. We have attempted to squeeze the swim into the very busy ocean swims calendar. All those competitors who previously entered for 28th February, 2010 they will have their entries automatically carried over to the 11th April, 2010. Again our sincere apologies from the 28th of February, 2010 and we look forward to welcoming competitors back on Sunday 11th April, 2010.

os.c says

A newer swim but there's a great atmosphere about it. Long Reef tries very hard to put on a good day. Anti-clockwise around the circuit is a bit unusual, too. This beach can be exposed to difficult conditions, but it also receives protection in some conditions from the long reef (point) heading out from its northern end.
